One of my favorite quotes from the self-help/behavioral self presentation book that I recently read is, “Stonewalls are like a road map to the truth. You need to look at the road and ask yourself, ‘Why are we doing this?“.
I think this is one of those great examples of self-awareness. The only reason you’re asking yourself why you’re doing something is because you want to get an education. You don’t actually want to learn.
Stonewalling quotes are like the other side of the self-awareness coin. But instead of asking yourself why youre doing something, you ask yourself why youre doing something wrong.
We’ve all been guilty of stonewalling. It’s just a habit. It’s just a way we avoid thinking about the issue – the reasons we’re doing something. It’s like putting a lid on all the water in your sink and only letting out a trickle. You’re not really asking yourself why you’re doing it. You’re just doing it to avoid thinking about why youre doing it.
This doesn’t mean that you’re guilty of stonewalling. Weve all been guilty of stonewalling. Its just a habit. Its just a way we avoid thinking about the issue – the reasons were doing something. Its like putting a lid on all the water in your sink and only letting out a trickle. Youre not really asking yourself why youre doing it. Youre just doing it to avoid thinking about why youre doing it.
It also helps to break the habit of stonewalling while you wait for the answers. Think of something youre doing that you have no business doing, and then stop. Imagine it and then ask yourself why youre doing it, and then stop. It will be easier, and you wont feel like youre just doing it for the sake of being polite.
Stonewalling also has a lot to do with resisting the temptation to think about why youre doing it and what you are really trying to avoid. Sometimes it can really be a self-defeating thing to think about why youre doing something when you know deep down it isnt going to work out in the end.
In many ways we think of stonewalling as an act of rebellion. It’s a way to get away from a certain set of rules and try something new, and not think about why youre doing it. If you get in a fight with a bunch of people who say you can only do this by yourself, then youre more likely to fight them off than they being put in a situation with you.
However, the word “stonewall” is not a term you hear often in the context of business. It actually comes from the Latin word “stonewall,” which means “to stand firm to the point of making a promise” or “to make a promise to someone.” It’s a way of saying, “I promise not to do something without telling you.
