The other day I was talking to a friend of mine about mindfulness. She’s a mindfulness enthusiast, and I think it’s really important to include mindfulness as part of your daily routine. At my house we have a mindfulness bulletin board. Every morning we have a mindfulness practice to help us with our day. This is something I am trying to incorporate more into my life. When I was a child, I would always play with my finger and see if the tip was still there.
I think of myself as a very mindful person, but I have a tendency to overthink things a little. I’m always trying to think that I’m doing the right thing, but sometimes I forget. Sometimes I get this feeling that I didn’t actually do anything, or I’m just making up things. One time when I was really depressed, I tried to think I was doing the right thing.
If you want to be more mindful, try making a list of things you want to do that day. Set a timer on your phone or computer to remind yourself to do them, or plan to do them for a few days. The more you make a plan and get on with it the better.
I’ve found that setting a timer or a reminder is far more effective than just doing random things. I’ve even found that I’m much more likely to stick to a plan if I’m reminded. It’s also important to note that you should not be doing things randomly, but that you should be making a plan and sticking to it. Just because you do something, it doesn’t mean that you did it well.
I’m sure that many of you have heard that you should make a plan before you do anything. This is true and you should make a plan that you know what you are trying to do and why. If you know the answer to a question or problem, you can plan to do it. Doing random action without planning is a dangerous path to take.
Another way to view plans is to think like a planter. You can plant seeds in your garden because you know what you are doing and how long it will take to get them to grow. You can plant a seed in the summer heat, but not when it gets cold. You might not want to plant your plant and see it grow in the winter. Instead, you can plant it in the spring and watch it grow into a healthy, blooming plant.
This is why mindfulness meditation is such a powerful practice. It is so easy to get lost in random action because you don’t plan it out. Mindfulness meditation doesn’t make you a mind-reader, just a mind-collector. Mindfulness involves a lot of monitoring and a lot of being aware of when you are being mind-tricked. It is not a substitute for planning and planning is not a substitute for mindfulness. Mindfulness is an enhancement to planning.
Mindfulness teaches us to learn to let go of our habitual thoughts and become aware of our thoughts. When you can do so, you are more likely to notice when you are being mind-tricked, and you can become more aware of your habitual thoughts, and you can be a better mind-collector.
Mindfulness is not a substitute for planning. It is a way of being more aware of what you are doing, and of the thoughts that are going through your head. Mindfulness is a very specific thing that you have to learn to do, learn to pay attention, learn to be aware of your thoughts. It is an enhancement to the planning you already have, and you get to do that without having to think and plan about it.
Mindfulness has been around for more than a few years now, and it is really the only thing that has been as widely accepted and promoted as it is. It is a way to help you be more aware of the mental and emotional chatter around you, and of your thoughts.
